I’m still jetlagged, is that normal? For some reason I feel like it’s not.
We revived the State Prison Surprise this evening with our first practice in a while. The rock is still there. The only problem is with our rehearsal space. Rehearsal spaces in the New York area are a cruel mistress. They’re often a necessity, so your standards are often forced way down into sub par territory. It is actually a documented fact, the band They Might Be Giants stayed as just 2 dudes with a drum machine, because finding a rehearsal space in Brooklyn was way too difficult. Yes, I heard it on Terry Gross. Well, we moved into this new place in the late summer, and we were told it had air conditioning, which blew our collective minds. Our previous space was probably the best exercise regime anyone could ever hope for. I called it The Brick Oven, you would lose several pounds every summer just from occasional rehearsals. So, one season, nice and cool, we figure we’re set. BUT, in rolls November, and we get a little worried. The heat is not coming on. Today there was snow on the ground…still…nothing. The faucet in the bathroom doesn’t even give out hot water. I guess we found ourselves a cheap landlord. You have to put up with a lot to own drums and amps in this area. You could have live chickens in the room, a freight train going by next door, and be sharing a room with 6 other thrash metal/polka bands, and someone out there is still going to pay for it. There’s probably already a waiting list.
